Trace monotype is a direct transfer method of printmaking that creates a one-of-a-kind printed image entirely by hand. It uses minimal space and tools and can be done at your kitchen table, yet produces a complex layering of rich, atmospheric marks. It can be combined with other methods of printmaking to add a unique hand drawn quality to your editions. Even if you don’t feel that drawing is your strong point, you can create beautiful trace monotypes.
Just like its name implies, trace monotype involves some tracing. Please bring some source material (sketches, photographs) photocopied onto 8.5×11 paper. These source images will be ruined in the process, so please don’t bring precious original drawings or photos! Keep in mind that the final print will be a mirror image of your original image, so if your image contains text, you should reverse the image in a photo editing programme and print it out. If you’re not sure about how this works, let us know and we can help you!
Depending on the complexity of your image idea, you may complete more than one trace monotype in the workshop, but by the end of the night you will take at least one beautiful finished print home with you.
Materials will be provided, including paper.
Limited to 10 participants. To secure your spot in the class, a non-refundable deposit of 30% is required. Register in person at Levigator Press or call 519-991-4972.
