Student work from tonight’s Block Print on Fabric class

Here are the gorgeous fabrics created by our most recent students. They started with a base layer of printing from large wood blocks chosen from our woodblock library, then created their own designs by hand stamping smaller linoleum blocks and letterpress type and ornaments.

It’s fascinating to see the vast difference between these pieces and the ones made by the previous group who took this class, using the same blocks and fabrics. It gets me so excited about the possibilities for what people can accomplish in this class!

Here are some shots of tonight’s full pieces of finished fabrics:

Screenprint: private instruction

Today we had Carly from Completely Carly in the studio for a private instruction session in screenprinting. She learned how to prepare artwork and expose a screen, and printed up some fabrics for notebook covers and these super cute baby onesies she makes and sells:

You can check out Carly’s work at upcoming Walkerville Night Markets (last Friday of every month), as well as the City Market Art Market on the first weekend in June.

Private instruction sessions are a great way to learn a process when you have a specific project in mind, and can be booked for during or outside shop hours, any time there isn’t a class running. Just give us a call to discuss planning a session for your own special print, publishing, or bookbinding project!

Reductive linocut

Here’s another reductive print recently completed by a student in our studio, this time in linocut. It began with a light gray layer (not shown), then this teal:

The third run was printed in a bronze colour:

And then the key layer tied it all together in deep blue:

Letterpress cards workshop

In our recent two-session letterpress cards class, students set their own designs in a mix of wood and metal type and experimented with printing them both on the small platen and the proof press. Check out some of their cards and lockups:

Hardcover stab binding class

Just look at this beautiful student book, created over two sessions in our most recent bookbinding class. Cover boards are wrapped in decorative endpapers cut from old copies of the Golden Home and High School Encyclopedia, and the binding was done in the hemp leaf pattern.

Coptic binding class

In last night’s bookbinding class we made Coptic journals using Mohawk Superfine paper and cover boards cut from the covers of old atlases and children’s encyclopedias. Here are some of the student projects, finished and in progress:

Block prints on fabric

Here are some of the fun fabric prints our Wednesday students made. They chose an image from our woodblock library to use as a background (a street map of the Walkerville neighbourhood, printed in green), then they dressed those up with a variety of small wood and lino blocks and rubber stamps. They really got creative and made some amazing prints!

Yes, there’s that Day-Glo orange again. We love that colour here at Levigator Press.

There was a lot of interest in this class so for those of you who missed it, we’ll be running it again on Monday, June 8. Stay tuned, or call the shop now to register!

Rubber stamps class

Our Wednesday night workshop participants had loads of fun carving their rubber stamps and printing them on some colourful French Paper cards and envelopes. We broke into that special can of orange Day-Glo ink again because you just cannot go wrong with that glorious colour. Check it out:
