Beginner Draw & Sketch

This class will give you the skills and tools you need for expressive observational drawing (even if you’ve never drawn before!). We will start with basic mark making, and then move to drawing simple objects with a crash course on sighting and measuring. The focus will be on developing the ability to translate what you see to the page.

Beginner Portraiture

In this class you will learn tips and tricks for drawing sensitive, convincing portrait likenesses. There will be discussion of general facial features and proportions but the focus will be on expressive mark making and developing a keen observation of the forms of the face.

Absolute Beginner Knitting

Whether you’ve never knit before or just need a refresher, this class will give you all the basics to get you started! We will cover the knit stitch, the purl stitch, casting on, binding off, as well as some simple increases and decreases. With these tools, you’ll be ready to take on the world of knitting!

Fall 2013:

Beginning Bookbinding: Coptic Binding
Thursday, November 21, 7pm – 9:30pm

Coptic Binding, originating in Egypt, is a method in which folded sections of pages are sewn together to create a decorative chain stitch across the exposed spine between rigid covers. This is an ideal method for binding albums and sketchbooks, as the book can be laid open entirely flat. Materials and an instruction kit are provided, and you will leave the class with a completed book. Cost: $30.00

Introduction to Trace Monotype
Tuesday, December 3, 7pm – 9:30pm

Trace monotype is a direct transfer method of printmaking that creates a one-of-a-kind printed image entirely by hand. It uses minimal space and tools and can be done at your kitchen table, yet produces a complex layering of rich, atmospheric marks. Cost: $30.00

Spring 2013:

Beginning Bookbinding: Japanese Stab Binding
Tuesday, March 26, 7pm – 9:30pm

Stab binding is one of the simplest and earliest forms of bookbinding, using single sheets in which holes are stabbed or drilled and sewn on the outside using a variety of traditional stitch patterns. Materials and an instruction kit are provided, and you will leave the class with a completed book. Cost: $30.00

Beginning Bookbinding: Longstitch Binding
Tuesday, April 23, 7pm – 9:30pm

Longstitch binding is a European method in which folded sections of sheets are sewn directly through a soft or rigid cover to create a staggered stitch pattern on the spine of the book. Materials and an instruction kit are provided, and you will leave the class with a completed book. Cost: $30.00

Introduction to Woodblock Printing (3 sessions)
Tuesday nights, April 30, May 7, May 14, 7pm – 9pm

Materials are provided. You will learn the basics of carving a wood block and printing by hand in colour using both reductive and multiple-block methods, and will leave the class with a small edition of completed prints. Cost: $60.00
